Meaningful Monday

WARNING: Mineral Oil is not healthy for your hair

The American Heritage Science Dictionary defines a carcinogen as a substance or agent that can cause cells to become cancerous by altering their genetic structure so that they multiply continuously and become malignant. Asbestos, DDT, and tobacco smoke are examples of carcinogens. Mineral Oil is also a known carcinogen as proven by the U.S. National Toxicology Program’s Tenth Report on Carcinogens. Mineral oil and petrolatum form an oily film over skin to lock in moisture, but trap in toxins and wastes and hinder normal skin respiration by keeping oxygen out. Meaning: IT SUFFOCATES YOUR SKIN!

What does this mean for us? Well most of the products that are on the shelves contain mineral oil &/or petrolatum. Please be aware & be an informed consumer.

My suggestion...avoid these!

Did you know?

The FDA said “Hair relaxers and hair dyes are among its top consumer complaint areas. Complaints range from hair breakage to sympton warranting an hospital emergency room visit”. Also” In February 1994, FDA and the American Cancer Society released an epidemiologic study involving 573,000 women. Researchers found that women who had never used permanent hair dyes showed decreased risk of all fatal cancers combined and of urinary system cancers.

Thinking of {GO}ing Natural: Take 2

"Are Men Attracted to Natural Hair?"

Ok, first let's get the facts out of the way:
Within the last two generations, marriage rates for Black people in America have dropped drastically. Between 1970 and 2001, the Black American marriage rate dropped by 34%, compared to 17% in the general population. Black women are also the least likely group to get married in the United States & if she decides wed an Black man, they have the highest divorce rate in the United States. FACT!

Soooo... not only that, but let's talk about Black men that are available for marriage AND marriage/relationship worthy. Hmmm... educationed? has a job? no kids? prison? down-low? substance abuse?

Corporate America & Natural Hair - Part 2

The blog BoomerGirl Diary reports:

"Corporate America is still conservative"and "Corporate image can be tricky"But the blog notes a comment from a representative from Glamour magazine, "As long as hair is neat and put together, there is no natural hair texture that is inappropriate for Corporate America. It is increasingly important to show your personal style no matter where you work."

It seems as if Corporate America is split with opinions of natural hair or not.
What are we to do? What is the atmosphere like in your office?

But, don't forget...-Love your hair

Corporate America & Natural Hair

Is wearing your hair in its natural state acceptable in Corporate America today?

Just 2 years ago a former associate of Glamour magazine told a room full of professionals that "Afro-styled hairdos and dreadlocks and glamour dont's." "No offense, but those political hairstyles really have to go."

Why is it that wearing your hair with out chemicals is a political statement? Are these the feelings of most in Corporate America?

What do you think?

The statements by the former Glamour associate were reported on by American Lawyer Magazine

Just 20 years ago

A 1988 NY Times article stated the following:

"For the black women who wore them in the tumultuous 1960's, large Afros symbolized black pride and a refusal to endure the arduous processes of chemically or thermally straightening their hair. The demand for natural styles, Mr. Atchison said, signals little more than women following a new trend. ''The political statement in hair in America is over,'' he said. ''Now, it's what's in your head more than what's on it. That was in the 60's.'' With women of different races constantly borrowing hair styles from each other for variety, he added, ''The only statement hair is making is style, which is a great point to be at.''

Is this true today? Is this what you have seen in today's culture?

Thinking of {GO}ing Natural?

When transitioning to fully natural so many questions & issues arise. How will I be perceived on the job or if going for a new position? Are men attracted to natural hair? What will my friends & family think? Will it look good on me? Do I want to do the "BIG CHOP"?

The truth is we are all influenced by society & those around us. Just about every kinky & curly head has asked themselves these same questions. And we all have different experiences with the results... but what I have found is that most are excited & have renewed confidence by the switch. They are embraced by a whole community that supports their decision & opened to a whole new world of wellness & education.

Stay tuned as we explore some of these issues in future post! Talk to us & tell us what questions or issues have arised for you while transitioning!

Click on the following link for some very helpful tips...SHOUT OUT to one of my fave youtubers: Rustic Beauty! This is her opinion & tips on transitioning:

Meaningful Monday

Stay In Your Lane *sigh*
Good day all my {GO} family!
Today's Meaningful Monday is somewhat of a reminder, that we are all beautiful in our own way and everyone can see it... IF we compliment what is interesting & becoming of us.
Have you ever seen someone that looked as if they were just trying too hard to be something they are not, or once was? LET IT {GO}! Everyone can not be Beyonce. Some of us can't even look at Beyonce as inspiration... She is not in our "Lane," she's not even on the same freeway with us LOL. BUT! You can always find someone who is, to look to as inspiration. From Jill Scott or Angie Stone to Erykah Badu or even someone you know personally... there is someone for everyone. Honestly look at your features and assets and base your inspiration on those who share your features... You may find that they can help you enhance what you are already working with by simply adapting some of their flavor as your own!
Share your inspiration with the {GO} family... who inspires your style?? Do you know of some natural divas that go overlooked that maybe someone else can be inspired by?
Having a Meaningful Monday & remember to Stay In Your Lane!!

Limp Hair?

Did you know...
limp hair is often the result of product build-up? Some of us choose the co-wash method {using only conditioner to wash our hair} some opt for shampoo. Which ever the case, once we moisturize, product build-up can easily result in limp locs. Here's a tip!
{Apple Cider Vinegar}
The vinegar is a powerful astringent that can cleanse the hair shaft of any locked in build-up.
What to do?
Use about a cup of regular Apple Cider Vinegar in the shower... be careful the smell may take a few minutes for you to adjust to... Hey It's VINEGAR! LOL
Before you bathe, pour half a cup into your hair, massage your scalp gently & rinse. Repeat! Be sure to rinse completely out & apply a light moisturizer to damp hair.
You will notice a fantasic shine to your light revived kinks!

Kinky Kids

Awww... kids are so adorable! Until you try to comb their hair.

We all want the best for our kids, whether it be our own, our nieces and nephews, or just a close friend's kid. It's sad, but sometimes just the sheer headache & stress of trying to do their hair can drive some to the drastic measures of putting dangerous, harmful & down right poisionous chemicals on these tender heads.
We have to teach our young ones not only by example but by educating them on their type of hair, healthy products, and styles that work for them. If you don't who will?
Make it apart of their idenity, it's who they are... that it's ok to be a kinky kid! In fact make them proud of their tender curls, by giving them positive images, helpful tips and the confidence to wear their crowns with diginty. Even by sharing your own natural headed struggles with them will enlighten & encourage them!
So Rock On Kinky Kids!

Meaningful Monday

Friendship:
the cooperative & supportive behavior between two or more people.

It's so important when transitioning to have those great people around you that support your journey. Even if you've been natural for years, sometimes you can get discouraged. Having that support system that says "YOU LOOK GREAT!" "KEEP GOING!" is priceless. Surround yourself with positive people that want the best for... healthy, curly, kinky, nappy hair, that makes you feel like you! So be a friend & let someone be a friend to you. If you see someone with their curls & kinks in the mall, at the gas station, why not pass them a quick compliment to boost their confidence and let them know the community of {GO} girls & guys supports them!!

Keep it kinky! Cause that's what friends are for!
