Natural Hair Culture and Influences Part 3

Are you passionate about your Natural?
Do sistas with Relaxed or Straight hair annoy you?
Watch out you may be labeled a "Natural Hair Nazi". On my weekly search of the natural hair culture I found this interesting label for people who wear their hair natural and are considered over the top with it. Some of us that are fussy about our natural hair products, but will go out and down a burger, fries and don't forget the shake... oh, gotta have the shake. You know some people consider them half natural.
Is this a fair assessment of people who are enthusiastic about sharing there natural hair journey? We are bombarded with relaxed or straight hair images...everywhere. We even have silly people going on tv shows commenting that natural hair does not look good, is not presentable in certain arenas, and is rebellious. To go against the grain, don't you have to make a stand?

No one wants to be attacked about the choices they make, especially about their hair.
But we have to ask ourselves a few questions, is my hair healthy?, does it represent the true me?, and do the images I see in the media influence my view of my hair?

What ever your decision... be real, be true, love YOUR hair. And I guess give the straight hairs a break...

Natural Hair Culture and Influences Part 2

What do you have to do to build this confidence? -Love your hair!

Touch it, run your fingers down to your scalp. Embrace the ringlets, kinksand yes [Photo]even the naps. Feel the texture, appreciate that this is your personalheritage. This hair describes your family history, it tells a story. How tight are your kinks? Once you accept your hair, what effect can the chemically altered culture have on you? You will walk down the street rockin' the fro, or take a drive with a new fond look of "I don't care about your straight hair" on your face. Confidence will wrap you up, before you know it.

Strut on Natural girl... Kick those fabulous kinks!

Natural Hair Culture and Influences Part 1

What is primary quality that one must have to go natural?

Confidence, Confidence... Confidence
One chemically altered hair magazine stated "that you have to be bold, edgy and confident to go against the grain and go natural". As stated in a previous post, you may have to down right rebel against the thoughts that permeate today's culture. The natural hair culture is one of strength, creativity and flexibility. All of that wrapped up with a jumbo helping of Confidence. How do you build that confidence? Where does it come from?
To be continued...

Good Hair or Bad Hair?

One Cultural Battle that exists today between people that are natural or chemically altered, is this thought of Good Hair or Bad Hair. Which is it? Simply because someone chooses to wear their hair in the natural state (nappy, kinky or curly) is that bad hair? This thought alone can discourage someone that is interested in pursuing or embracing their natural hair. What is the determining factor? Who or what decides if you have good hair? Is it the flow of your hair? Is it the feel of your curls or locs? Or is the love and attention you give your precious kinks?
What do you think? Do you have Bad Hair... or do you have Good Hair that is not the cultural norm?

-Love your hair...

Meaningful Mondays

Rebellious:
defiant, noncompliant, disruptive.
Many times peoples look at our curly, kinky, nappy hair and wonder, in amazement, "why?"
All around us are these long haired, permed, dyed, lyed, over processed, straight haired, sown-in, glued-in, weaved, long flowing strands.
And we smile and shake our head and walk on by the billboards, tv shows, magazines & websites.
Other people get down right upset. Wondering (again in amazement) how we could let our hair curl and twirl around our crowns. "Are you just REBELLIOUS?"
I ask.. "Do you want to put me in a box &/or label me? Then sure..."
YES
I rebel aganist the LYE.
I rebel aganist the sterotypes.
I rebel aganist YOUR idea of beautiful.
I rebel aganist the poisionist ideas & images you feed me.
I embrace what & who I am... naturally, organically curly, kinky, nappy.
I accept my crown of curls & twirls as an honor.
I am ME.
If being me causes me to stand out in a crowd, if I disrupt the flow with a kink, if I do not comply with the lye and defy the pattern of sterotypes... then
I Rebel...

happily with smile.
Have a peaceful & meaningful Monday {GO} boys & girls!

Go Girl 3 goes to My Black is Beautiful Conference

The My Black is Beautiful Conference
definitely will start a conversation and movement.

Actress Tasha Smith hosted the event. Tasha added her personal flavor with positive words and humor.

The event seems to be geared toward African American women appreciating the beauty they have inside and outside. That's not to say that women of all colors are not beautiful. But this group in particular needs a lift in this area. That statement was made that no matter if you wear your hair with a weave, natural or whatever you are beautiful.

There was also a panel of celebrities with a wide range of positive thoughts for African American people. The celebrities ranged from Lailah Hathaway to various DJs of radio. Encouraging people to feed their minds on positive things instead of negative things in pop culture.

So everyone...Make Your Black Beautiful

The Silver Lining

{Greyheadness:}
The loss of hair color due to a
gradual fall in melanin production in the hair bulb.

What does that mean? Hair color is produced by tiny hair pigment cells/melanin or color within our hair shafts. As we age, the production of those pigments gradually declines until our hair stops making pigment/color. New hairs grow in without pigment, resulting in grey hair. How does this translate for our lovely natural hair? "The Senile Stage" {as described by one of our followers... Thanks Naomi!} Mean & grey stubborn strands that refuse to curl. Unfortunately there is no scientific evidence that any diet, herb, supplement, or product can reduce or reverse grey hair. But why worry, many people look fab with grey hair!

Need I say more?

So what should we do with those unruly silver linings?
Usually people notice their first grey hairs near their temples. Then the greyness spreads to the crown, and later to the back of the head. The best advice I can give is to show a little extra care to those area with creamy oil based moisturizers, shea butter is a great organic way to show a lil' TLC. You can also "train" your hair to curl by two strand twists or coiling the hair often. Love those streaks of wisdom and always look for the

When Styling the Kinks & the Napps

Hair that is coarse and thick as pictured below, the absolute last thing you want to do is get a wide tooth comb and start combing. That would be equivalent to Pure Torture.

What You can do is..............

  • Get purified water and a lightweight essential oil
  • mix 3/4 water to 1/4 oil
  • in a spray bottle, mix well
  • separate a section of hair with the back end of a rat tail comb (never comb with that comb -just for sectioning hair off)
  • Then spray mix on a section of hair at the same time holding hair in palm and massaging mixture on the hair
  • Use duck bill hair pens to hold separated parts....
  • the moisturized hair should be brushed with paddle brush, starting from the ends and working back to the roots applying your favorite styling gel , check our Older Post for styling ideas
  • Pic is used for lifting and shaping the style, not picking the hair (Picking can be damaging)

Below Nappy & Kinky User Friendly Tools

Weather the Waves...

Have you notice the weather change... in your HAIR?

Each season has a different effect on our hair. What's going on with your curls & twirls? Let's us know by leaving a comment below so others can benefit from our suggestions. Here are a few {GO} tips for the changing seasons:

#1 Moisture- sometimes the sun can just zap the moisture from our tender kinks. Try deep conditioning with Olive Oil and Honey! Cover with a shower cap and a warm towel on top so it a deeply penetrate the shaft of the hair. A lil sticky, but your hair will be soft and shiny afterwards! For the full recipe email us at thegogirls@gmail.com!

#2 Protective styles- every thing from bunned up twists to silk or satin scarfs. Try to protect your hair from the elements as much as possible until your hair adjust to the changing of the seasons. (tune in Friday for a special Weekend Wave: Protective Styles!)

#3 WATER- yes drink it! Our hair can become brittle with the changing seasons. If you want a little flavor try a nice cool herbal tea instead of coffee or milk based drinks. Our hair loves water INSIDE & out.

Have a meaningful & productive day {GO} boys & girls!

Reasons a Woman may choose to go Natural

Let's Talk .......................
There are times in a woman's life when she is very delicate and does not need to absorb harsh chemicals into the blood stream. Times such as ...

When
a BABY is developing in the womb ....

When she is
Breast Feeding a Baby ...................

When her
health has been compromised by Disease....

or when
hair is over processed............. or she is tired of the scorched ears and edges from the hot comb, the burnt places on the scalp from the chemicals and the insensitivity of the technicians applying the chemicals...........
GO to this site
http://charismaallover.wordpress.com/2008/05/24/the-dangers-of-using-relaxers/

So what
does she do?

{GO} Grow Organic is providing support for those very
deilicate times with styles and cultivation of the Natural Hair.
Our hope is
that after this woman learns to work with her own hair, that she never has a need to introduce any harsh substance into her life or the lives of her children again.

We are interested in your views so post your opinion for the benefit of all of us or email thegogirls@gmail.com
