Weekend Wave

Braid-Out

This is an easy style to tame those curly kinky tresses.

What you need:

  • Moisturizer &/or holding substance
Not much is needed to create this style, just several plaits all of your head. Depending on how "wavy" you want the hair to appear the more plaits you would need to start with. If you want looser looking waves maybe 5 to 6 plaits will do the job.

Start with damp hair, moisturize well and part hair for each plait.
WHAT IS A PLAIT? You say??

Take three strands of hair and intertwin them by a braiding method, strand over strand. See the picture to the left: Got it?? OK!

Each section you part off for your plait use a small amount of holding stubstance, nothing too stiff so you get a softer look and easier to blend the hair together to get the look you desire. Once you get all your plaits braided. Let it set until dry. Once dry, unleash your waves with a touch of oil to give it a little shine. Play around with it until you get the look you want!
TIP:
Are your parts showing?? Using a spary bottle spritz your roots with water and gently massage your scalp where the parts are....VOLIA! No more parts!

The Weekend Wave

Welcome to The Weekend Wave! We will feature styles for curly, kinky hair of all lengths and textures! This weekend why not rock the Roller Set Curls!? For medium length...

Now that Spring has finally come out to play why not show off some playful bouncy curls!? For the ladies that are willing to spend a lil' extra time on their tresses this a great style to show off your natural versatility!

What You Need To Create This Look:

  • Freshly washed hair, sopping wet! *a spray bottle is useful if your hair tends to drink quickly*

  • Your fave moisturizer

  • Wide tooth comb

  • Magnetic rollers or sprial rollers

  • Hooded dryer *optional*

  • Time & patiance

For me magnetic rollers with the clips are the easiest to use when working with natural hair. They come in all different sizes depending on how tight you want your curls to come out. Because our hair has a tendency to want to curl up on it's own the matching clip covers the hair in a way that prevents it from doing just that.

Work with one section at a time so you don't overwhelm yourself. Part hair neatly and using your fave moisturizer take each section and moisturize your sopping wet hair WELL. Part for each roller until your hold head is done. If you have a hooded dryer (the option of air drying is sometimes a lengthy process) & depending on how quickly your hair dries... *side note: natural hair can take up to 24 hours to completely dry, even though it feels dry it may not be COMPLETELY dry* You may want to sit under the dryer for at least an hour then check one roller toward the back to see if your hair is dry. Once your hair is dry enough that it easily detaches from the roller you are ready to rock! Take all your rollers out, and finger separate your curls to get that full look. If you want to keep the look for a couple days try satin covered sponge rollers or pin curls. Catch The Weekend Wave by rocking your bouncy Spring Time Roller Set Curls!

Bone Health: Are You At Risk?

By Dr. Kathleen DeOreo Naturopathic Doctor

Bone Density = Formation - Resorption
Bone is a very active tissue undergoing constant change. This change is a process of formation and resorption (breakdown). Osteoporosis, a loss of bone density, occurs when the resorption rate is greater than the rate of formation of new bone. Since bone formation is difficult to assess, it is important to identify if you are among the men and women with rapid bone breakdown. If you are, you have the greatest risk for osteoporosis.

Old School

These women of the past blazed the trail
for natural hairstyles we walk today.
The initial feeling was these women were
rebelling against their era.
This thought has moved into a feeling
of self-acceptance and love of heritage.
